Abstract

The present study was conducted to provide a model of the factors influencing financial literacy among ninth-grade students. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach based on grounded theory was adopted for data collection. Participants were selected through purposive sampling from ninth-grade students in Isfahan city. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and theoretical saturation was reached after interviewing 14 students. The qualitative data from the interviews were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding processes. To ensure the quality and validity of the research, expert review, evaluation, and verification of the data were utilized. According to the perspectives of ninth-grade students, the identified categories and subcategories were organized into two main groups: internal factors and external factors. Internal factors included subcategories such as financial knowledge, motivation, metacognition, problem-solving skills, and beliefs. The subcategories of society, educational environment, and family were classified as external factors influencing the financial literacy of ninth-grade students. Ultimately, a theoretical model of the factors affecting students’ financial literacy was developed and presented as the main finding of the study. It is hoped that the analysis of these factors will provide suitable strategies for educational planners to enhance students’ financial literacy.
